What fundamentally distinguishes fiber optic connectors?
Three characteristics shape every connector. First the ferrule, the precision sleeve guiding the fiber: its diameter (1.25 / 2.5 / 3.175 mm) and material (ceramic or metal) determine precision, thermal behaviour and use case. Second the coupling principle: threads hold under vibration, push-pull and latch designs mate faster. Third the end-face polish: flat, domed (PC) or angled at 8° (APC), which governs insertion and return loss.
FSMA 905: the rugged classic for lasers and large-core fibers
An FSMA connector (also F-SMA, per IEC 61754-22) is a threaded connector with a 3.175 mm ferrule, derived in the late 1970s from the coaxial SMA of RF technology. Its end face is polished flat; the fiber ends do not touch. That costs some loss but makes the design exceptionally rugged and open to large core diameters. This is why FSMA 905 remains the standard in spectroscopy, medical technology and laser beam delivery up to the kW range. FC: threaded coupling for metrology and PM applications
The FC connector (ferrule connector, IEC 61754-13) was the first with a ceramic ferrule (2.5 mm) and long dominated the singlemode world. Its metal housing with coupling nut withstands pull and vibration; the key secures angular alignment, which is essential for APC polish and polarization-maintaining fibers. For PM applications FEMOtech builds the FCPC connector with a defined anti-rotation device (narrow/wide key).
SC and LC: the telecom and data centre standards
The SC (IEC 61754-4) mates push-pull and, with its 2.5 mm ceramic ferrule, is the common connector in FTTH environments. The LC (IEC 61754-20) halves the ferrule diameter to 1.25 mm and latches like an RJ45; its packing density made it the standard in data centres and transceivers. The FEMOtech connector system ELC/ESC, blown in or pulled in without splicing, builds on these two designs.
DIN 47256: the German niche connector
The DIN connector (also LSA connector) per DIN 47256 uses a slim threaded coupling with a spring-mounted 2.5 mm ferrule. Historically rooted in German telecommunications, it lives on in metrology, sensing and legacy systems. FEMOtech produces it spring-loaded or rigid, with metal or ceramic ferrule.

Which type for which task?
As a rule of thumb: large-core fiber, high power or rough environments point to FSMA 905 with a metal ferrule; precision metrology and PM fibers to FC and FCPC; network roll-outs and building cabling to SC and LC; legacy systems keep their DIN. And where none of the standards fits, custom manufacturing begins: individual bores, adapted materials, power up to 3 kW.
