Why the ferrule decides the connection
Insertion loss, repeatability over many mating cycles and behaviour under heat all hinge on this one component. The material determines how precisely the guide bore can be machined, how the end face can be polished and where waste heat goes.
Zirconia ceramic: the precision benchmark of the telecom world
Zirconia (ZrO₂) is significantly harder than steel, hence scratch-resistant and low-wear over many mating cycles. Its fine grain allows excellently polished, reproducible end faces; concentricity is the best among common ferrule materials. That is why ceramic is the standard for singlemode and telecom connectors, including the FEMOtech FTTH system (ferrules Ø 1.25 mm and Ø 2.50 mm).
The limit: zirconia conducts heat poorly, at roughly 1.5–3 W/(m·K) about a tenth of stainless steel. At high optical powers, waste heat accumulates at the end face.
Stainless steel: robust in rough environments
Stainless steel ferrules shrug off vibration, impact and rough industrial environments and resist corrosion. Compared to ceramic they are softer and expand more under temperature changes; in return they can, like all metal ferrules, be machined with individual bores.
Copper: the heat sink for high power
Copper conducts heat at around 390 W/(m·K), orders of magnitude better than ceramic or stainless steel. In high-power connectors the copper ferrule therefore acts as a heat sink: waste heat and stray light end up in metal instead of adhesive. FEMOtech uses copper ferrules in the LD80-compatible programme and in high-power custom solutions up to 3 kW.
Arcap: non-magnetic, corrosion-proof, precisely machinable
Arcap denotes a family of iron-free copper-nickel-zinc alloys. For ferrules the combination is rare and useful: non-magnetic (relevant for medical technology and magnetically sensitive sensing), corrosion-resistant and very well machinable, hence ideal for precision turned parts with µm bores.
